Eight Medical Tests Everyone Should Have

The Preventive Services group has a conservative approach in choosing which tests to take and which ones to skip, preferring to choose only tests that are likely to lead to better health. Exercise Reduces the Likelihood of Breast Cancer Recurrence
The Nurses Health Study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), tracked nearly 3,000 women for up to 14 years after being diagnosed with breast cancer and found that exercise reduced the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence and increased the odds of living longer. Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, Harvard surgeon and author of “The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Fitness Plan,” explains, “recurrence rates and deaths from breast cancer decreased up to 40 percent among those who exercised most, compared with those who were sedentary. Brisk walking for 3-5 hours per week – about 30 minutes a day – netted the biggest benefits.”
Successful Diet Strategies
According to Suzanne Phelan of the National Weight Control Registry – an organization that tracks the weight-loss efforts of 6,000 participants – one of the most reliable techniques for weight loss has been close monitoring of calories and weight. To do this, participants keep a daily food diary and commit to daily weigh-ins. Both of these strategies combat the common tendency to underestimate calorie intake and overestimate physical activity by as much as 30 percent. In addition, the majority of registry participants watch less than 10 hours of television each week and average 11,000 steps (five miles) of walking each day.
