Technogym has been chosen to provide the equipment for the main gymnasium in the Olympic Village for the 2012 Olympics in London. The gymnasium will be open to all athletes taking part, and the specific preparation centers for the 28 disciplines located in the respective structures. Technogym expects to supply more than 750 pieces of equipment — details of which will be defined during the coming 24 months remaining before the event.
Nerio Alessandri, president of Technogym said, “This important achievement represents a victory for the whole Technogym team. We are very proud to have been chosen for the 5th time as the official supplier of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The London 2012 Olympics will be a unique chance to promote wellness as a social opportunity and to get increasing numbers of people interested in regular exercise.”
According to Lord Coe, the chairman of Locog (London Organising Committee), Technogym was selected “due to the absolute need to guarantee the athletes the very best technologies.”
Technogym’s two decades of commitment to the spread of wellness as a social opportunity had a fundamental role, beyond the innovative technologies that the company will provide for the athletes, in achieving this major result. In London the Olympics for the first time will represent a long-term investment in a healthier country; alongside with the Games, the City of London and the British Government will run a comprehensive program to attract the population to regular physical activity.
In a scenario in which cardiovascular illnesses — mostly due to sedentary lifestyles and poor lifestyle choices — are the leading cause of death. The number of people overweight worldwide has exceeded the number of those suffering from malnutrition. Large sporting events, thanks to their capacity for bringing people together, have the important mission of spreading a healthy sports culture amongst the population, and above all amongst young people. The advantages are obvious; for the Government it could mean a reduction in healthcare spending, companies will benefit from being able to count on workers who are healthier, more efficient and motivated, and people in general will be able to live better.
