Thank you notes are one of the best ways to attract prospects and get members to STAY at your facility. The notes costs very little, but bring unbelievable returns. I am certain that most, if not all of your competitors are skipping this simple, yet rarely used form of marketing.
Get into the habit of writing thank you notes for any reason. Most importantly, make sure you are giving these to your missed guests, your new members, your existing members, your local business contacts and your employees.
Write a “thank you” note to every person who tours your facility. Whether they join or not, they should receive a thank you note in their mailbox within 48 hours (Obviously, this highlights the importance of harvesting addresses on your guest register).
An example of a thank you letter to guests would be, “It was great speaking with you today. I sincerely hope you consider becoming a member. I know you’ll love it here! When you’re ready, just stop in or call me at 555-555-5555.”
Even those people you feel won’t “be back,” you will be pleasantly surprised by the number of those people who will respond positively to a thank you note. They’ll be checking out other fitness businesses in the area as well and will probably take a couple of days to compare before they decide. How many thank you notes do you think they’ll get during those days? My guess is that yours will be the only one.
Try to send the letter the same day they visited your club. Make sure the note consists of only your thank you. Don’t try to resell them in the note. Just let them know you’re there if they need you. Be sure to include your telephone number.
In addition to missed guests, all of your new members need to receive a “thank you” note immediately after joining as well. Your note to new members can say, “Thank you for becoming a member! Never hesitate to ask if we can do anything to help you reach your fitness goals. Enclosed you will find two gift cards for your friends. We are happy to pay for a month of your membership for every referral you send us! Thanks again!”
However, don’t limit “thank you” notes for just your prospects and new members. Your current members like to feel appreciated too, especially since they’re the ones paying your bills. At least every six months, your entire membership base should receive a letter of thanks. Something simple; “Just a quick Thank You for being a member! Without you we would not exist and we sincerely value your decision to continue to be a part of our family. Please do not hesitate if you need any help pursuing your fitness goals.” If you want, you can mention a gift. “Bring in this thank you card and receive a free water on your next visit!”
And last but not least, never forget to thank your employees, business partners and area retailers — anyone who has helped with your promotions, or anyone who has helped bring you members and improve your business. This will help ensure their willingness to help you in the future.
When you mail or e-mail a note of thanks to one of your employees or associates, it is remembered for a long time. So, send a quick thank you to all of your employees, no matter how much they may tease you for being a softy, deep down they will feel appreciated.
Get into the habit of writing “thank you” notes and immediately work your way into the hearts and minds of your prospects, members and everyone else in your business world.
