Summertime is rapidly coming to an end, and this means many of your members who took the season off will be returning to your club. But, there’s still time to get your summer house cleaning done, and don’t forget your sports floors. Here are some quick ways to make the areas of your club sparkling-new again, while traffic is low:
Rubber floors – They should be cleaned with a rotating-brush machine, using a mild detergent that contains a de-greasing agent. This should eliminate any spots under machines where grease and oil has started to soak into the rubber flooring. The floors can be cleaned in between the machines or, if you’re ambitious, you can have the machines moved to do the entire floor.
Wood floors – It’s a great time to screen the finish and put down a new coat of polyurethane. This consists of lightly abrading, but not completely removing, the existing finish and applying a new layer of polyurethane. This not only brightens the dull layer on top, but it also adds life to your flooring investment. In most cases, I’d suggest the use of a semi-gloss finish, since it is the easiest to keep clean throughout the rest of the year.
Carpeted areas – The cardiovascular equipment can easily be moved around so that a different quadrant of the floor can be cleaned on successive days with a commercial-grade carpet cleaning machine. Locker rooms and most free weight areas can typically be done in one night.
Commercial cleaning companies can usually perform these duties in the evenings, causing even less down time. Of course, for the intrepid, you can also rent any of the equipment to do it yourself. Just make sure that you are adequately trained on how to use the equipment and how to properly perform the job. There are also plenty of online resources that tell you how to properly perform these tasks.
These procedures should make a big impact on how your club looks when your members return in the fall. After that, routine maintenance can be carried out throughout the rest of the busier seasons, until next year.
