It takes time to surf online for good fitness tips. Many times we get distracted with all the other online garbage that is thrown at us — celebrity marriages, arguments in sporting locker rooms, etc.
However, I found a great article surfing on doctoroz.com. Bill Larson, a man who did something amazing — dropped weight from 400.6 pounds — now writes a blog for Doctor Oz’s website. Although Larson cut his size in half, this isn’t an inspirational story of his weight loss — it’s a story that pushed him to keep moving, as it should you.
He wrote the article discussing a random Saturday he decided to hit the gym. As he stepped onto the elliptical machine he noticed a basketball game in progress on the court below.
A typical basketball game may not have inspired anyone, but it could take away from the monotony of elliptical exercise. However, this basketball game wasn’t typical. It was a wheelchair basketball league. Instantly, the sight inspired Larson.
He said in his blog, “Every time I pedaled forward I knew I absolutely had to complete that 30 minutes. Why? Because I could do that with my legs. My legs are thankfully strong and able to walk, climb, run, kick and pedal that elliptical. And because any one of those guys below me would give buffalo nickels to be able to do what I can do. That’s when I felt ashamed for even thinking I could get away with not working out to my fullest.”
I’ve never witnessed a wheelchair basketball league myself. But the story itself painted a picture well enough for me to get up and hit the gym harder than I had in months. Many times our workouts lose some of their excitement and we forget that exercise isn’t only a must, but it is also an opportunity.
Remember, not everyone in the world has the ability or the opportunity to exercise in a club each month on new treadmills or perform an exercise routine on top-notch equipment. Count your blessings each day for that experience and continue to push harder.
From everyone at Club Solutions Magazine, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and keep in mind those in our world that don’t have the great opportunities we have.
