I know once I say it’s warm and here to stay, it will drop to 20 below and snow a foot. However, considering we’ve seen some warmer temperatures lately, I think it’s time to discuss your summer plans. You do have plans, right?
I’m not asking if you’re taking the family to Disney World this summer. Rather, what I am asking is, do you have a plan to keep members engaged this summer?
After a long, cold winter, you can bet people want two things: sunshine and outdoors — especially if they are active.
It won’t take much to get your members engaged throughout the summer. Rent out a sandlot somewhere in town and start up a club-wide softball league. Open your pools to amateur swim competitions, or host regular parties at the club or an external location.
Anything you can do to involve members, get them away from their normal workout and offer them something they don’t typically receive will keep your club on their mind. Think about the myriad of sports that could be practiced through your club: basketball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, softball, racquetball, tennis, swimming, etc.
You can try and host tournaments on weekends, or a summer-long season. Find a flat piece of land in a park, set up four cones (two at each end) and advertise soccer on Saturday morning.
You’ll need to use some type of signage to advertise these games. Make them different than other signs you use throughout the club to help them standout. You’ve got to grab the attention of your members. Maybe offer a pizza party for players following the game.
All types of extracurricular activities can be used to stay in tune to members. If you have an outdoor pool, fantastic! However, if you only offer gym equipment, a basketball or racquetball court, you might want to start thinking outside your club. Trust me, if you can help members in your city get outdoors and active, they are going to love your club.
