The predictions have begun! With January 1st only a few days away, bloggers and writers across the Web have begun speculating on what fitness and wellness trends will hit clubs and influence members, this upcoming year. What’s on the list — workouts such as Yoga, CrossFit, high-intensity interval training and more.
Well+Good NYC, a popular health and wellness blog, has predicted 14 fitness and wellness trends it believes will affect the health club industry in 2013. According to Well+Good NYC, yoga with an intense spin, is one future trend. Well+Good NYC wrote, “Now that more than 20 million Americans practice yoga, it’s no surprise that there’s more segmentation of yoga classes. Expect to see more yoga for athletes or for non-yogis who just want a great workout.”
Additionally, Well+Good NYC speculated that CrossFit would become a household name. According to Well+Good NYC, “The once fringe workout originally embraced by male law-enforcement officers has officially gone super mainstream … New York City has more than 30 ‘boxes’ (lingo for a CrossFit gym), and there are more than 4,000 nationwide. Not to mention a Reebok partnership and the televised CrossFit games.”
Daily News highlighted seven fitness and wellness trends it believed would make a splash this New Year, and its list included functional training. According to the Daily News article, “Seven Fitness and Wellness Trends in 2013,” clubs should, “Look for an upswing in classes such as TRX suspension training, P90X, boot camp and Kettlebell workouts, all designed to build strength for real-world activities.”
Concerning high intensity interval training (HIIT), the Daily News wrote, “The buzz over HIIT is only going to get stronger next year, bloggers say, as the principle of short, quick, intense workouts gets applied to everything from track drills to swimming to push-ups.”
Another trend for 2013 the Daily News highlighted was “wacky 5K races.” According to the Daily News, “This year zombie mania has expanded to fitness, with undead zombies chasing down participants in a series of 5K obstacle courses dubbed Run for Your Lives. Also Color Run 5K races — in which runners wear white T-shirts and get doused in colored powder-paint along the course — have swelled in popularity in the U.S. and have expanded to Australia. Some bloggers are predicting events such as a Hunger Games themed obstacle race springing up in 2013.”
Keep these predictions in mind as you think about new programs and additions you’d like to make to your clubs this New Year. Do you have any fitness and wellness trend predictions of your own you’d like to make for 2013?

Fun to read article but does it really depend on the trend? Not to mean any harm but i think the top on the list that people consider is to choose by what suits their body most. But then again, those who would want to be fit for the first time would want to search for the trending 🙂
