In my opinion there are two successful strategies to make a decision as a group. The group can either appoint a leader who will have final say in all decisions. Or, the group can vote, and determine that each vote carries the same weight.
Essentially, appointing a leader is the easiest way to come to a conclusion. If they are a good leader they will listen to everyone’s view, then make a final decision. However, by appointing a leader, that doesn’t always mean that the decisions will be the views of the group as a whole.
Appointing a leader gives a single individual the ability to make the best decisions that they see fit. However, as we have seen throughout history, if a leader makes enough decisions that negatively affect the group, that leader can be overthrown.
Essentially, if a group is to appoint a leader, they should look for the person with the most experience, and that leader should consult a group of advisors to determine the best possible outcome.
If a group decides to equally vote on decisions, it would be in the group’s best interest to have an odd number of people in the group. This would guarantee to always have an unequal number of votes. However, it’s reality and we don’t always have an uneven amount of people in a group.
What do you do when the group reaches a stalemate? I believe in this situation each side should appoint a person with the most information, allow each person to present their argument and then have the group think about each side over night. First thing the next morning, call another vote. I would carry this on until there is a winning vote, or until someone calls in sick and the voting is uneven — thus helping one side to carry a vote. If the hiring was performed correctly, the team should work well enough together to come to solutions that benefit the company as a whole.
In both ways to come to a conclusion, there is no way that everyone will be happy. Many times you will discuss ideas, and many times everyone will be on board. But, sometimes people will disagree. Just because there are disagreements doesn’t mean the company shouldn’t move forward.
Making decisions for a group, or as a group, isn’t easy. Because of this, it’s vital that the people you bring on board are team oriented, and understand how you make decisions. Some people can make decisions in these ways, but not everyone can without having their feelings hurt. How do you make decisions in your corporation?
