If you’re a fan of football, you most likely noticed a few key changes on players’ uniforms this October — pink is being displayed on arm bands, helmets, socks and more, and it’s all a part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM).
The NFL isn’t the only organization supporting the cause — gyms across the nation are banding together to raise awareness of breast cancer, which effects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and is the second leading cause of death among women.
In light of these unfortunate statistics, there’s a good chance a woman in your club has been diagnosed with breast cancer, is currently battling it or is in remission. And, there are a few things you can do to show your support.
- Visit NBCAM.org to view the list of collaborating organizations supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Consider showing your support to one of these organizations, through volunteering or donations.
- Create a custom NBCAM product (such as a t-shirt or tote bag), featuring your logo and a pink ribbon, to raise awareness. You can do so here: http://www.nbcamproducts.com/nbcamproducts/.
- Host a fundraiser and donate the proceeds to a NBCAM collaborating organization, such as the Prevent Cancer Foundation or Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. For example, offer a fee-based Group X class for $10, and donate those proceeds to your preferred organization.
- Look into offering a fitness program that caters to people going through treatment for not just breast cancer, but any form. ACSM offers a Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer certification, which allows trainers to “design and administer fitness assessments and exercise programs specific to a client’s cancer diagnosis, treatment and current recovery status.” Or, trainers can become certified in the Pink Ribbon Program, a Pilates-based program for post-operative breast cancer patients that helps them regain mobility and range of motion.
Are you already showing your support for NBCAM? If so, please share what you’re doing!
