Computers in health clubs have traditionally been used for word processing and accounting, however, they can also be used to prescribe and track exercise. There are many software packages available with varying features and capabilities. Choosing the best package for your environment can be a challenge. Some of the following benefits can be gained by using software with exercise.
The method in which personal training is implemented varies from health club to health club. A good software package should be configurable to satisfy most situations. If exercise prescriptioins are currently being generated manually, using software will save a great amount of time; however, there are many other benefits to be gained.
A properly implemented system can:
Increase training revenue by offering new programs.
Typically, a trainer will use the software to create workouts, print cards and reports, and lead the member through a one-on-one training session. However, an additional form of training could be offered where the member trains independently and consults with a trainer only once a week. This form of training attracts members who are not interested in one-on-one training but would like some direction and guidance for their workouts.Alternatively, a system could be configured where even more independence is given to your members. Providing computers for members would allow them to print their own cards and reports and view reference material. In this scenario, a trainer generates the workouts, and the member retrieves them; however, members have the freedom to create and modify their own workouts. This type of system requires minimal trainer support and offers yet another option for your members.
Show technology in your training protocols.
Much of the new exercise equipment has evolved through advanced technology. Technology has never been more advanced, and more people than ever are familiar with computers. By using software to prescribe exercise routines and deliver clear, consistent instructions and reports, this technology can be translated to your training organization.Keep members informed through deliverables.
Providing personalized workout cards, progress reports, fitness evaluations and exercise cards to your members on a regular basis will keep them informed of their progress and help motivate them, as well as increase their perceived value of their membership.Provide tools to keep your trainers focused.
Software can provide resources that can aid the trainer to explain exercise-related topics. Tools that are available include exercise analysis, muscle anatomy, body action descriptions and illustrations, and a cross reference between muscles, exercises and activities. By providing these references, trainers can stay focused on what is best for the particular member and provide a better service to them.Tailor it to your facility.
Being able to customize the deliverables with your logo, name and other information, will help brand your facility and give the reports a more personalized touch. Most software is supplied with a complete set of exercises that use various equipment. However, there will usually be exercises or equipment used in your facility that will not be supplied with the software.
Therefore, exercises should be able to be added to the ones supplied. If the software uses pictures and/or videos of the exercise, these should also be able to be included when adding an exercise. Exercises and equipment diagrammed on the exercise cards can be pictures taken in your facility and would tailor the system to your facility.
