Your Tool For Group Excercise

In the feature solution in last month’s issue, I wrote about four common challenges that most health clubs face.

Let’s review these challenges:

Challenge #1

I need one tool that can maximize member participation in my group exercise classes.

Challenge #2

I need one piece of equipment versatile enough to truly be considered multipurpose.

Challenge #3

How do I attract individuals from the rehabilitation market to my club?

Challenge #4

How do I minimize the expenditures associated with purchasing new equipment while at the same time maximize space for my member traffic flow?

In this month’s issue, we’ll take a closer look at Challenge #1: Is there a tool that can maximize member participation in my group exercise classes?

Group exercise classes are considered by some the number one tool for driving member retention. Health club members have often stated that group exercise offerings were the number one reason why they joined their club. In a recent article by Jim Annesi, Ph.D., and Patricia Amend it was noted that “Research has clearly and consistently demonstrated that exercise adherence is improved when a sense of group camaraderie or cohesion exists.” The article went on to state that 90 percent of all exercisers report they prefer to workout in a group. American Sports Data has reported that 63 percent of the population recognizes the benefits that health clubs can provide; yet they still do not join a health club.

This information suggests that group exercise classes can lead to a tremendous source of new revenue for health clubs.

So, how can health club managers maximize member participation in group exercise classes?

One answer is a new foam wedge, surrounded by a silkscreen protective cover and shaped in a 45-degree angle. This product can be used for various body exercises and therefore used for a variety of group exercise programs. Twenty-one different exercises for flexibility and strength, across various parts of the body have been identified so far.

Several group exercise programs can be conducted using the wedge as its centerpiece including, Kick IT, BW Yoga, ABS Only, Kids Play, Fit-Over- Fifty, circuit training, pre- and post-natal programs, balance training, personal training, Pilates, and so many more. The wedge is a great tool for group exercise classes. The compact size creates more room and lets health clubs maximize the number of members per class.

The wedge is versatile enough that it can be used for multiple types of classes and therefore it minimizes the equipment necessary for multiple classes.

“We purchased several wedge units and began to incorporate them into our total body conditioning class and…wow, what a workout!” said Terrence Fister, Vice President, Clay Group Exercises. “The piece practically dictates a new format. It was a snap to incorporate and my students love it,” Mr. Fister added.

“All of our classes which incorporate the wedge have been sold out with waiting lists exceeding 10 people,” said Michelle Hanlon, Group Fitness Manager at Equinox in Scarsdale, New York. “I have not been this motivated with a product since the birth of the spin bike,” added Ms. Hanlon.

Just like other successful clubs, your club can incorporate the wedge into new and existing programs and provide your members with a unique fitness experience.
