The New York Sports Clubs Somers’ staff in Westchester, N.Y. revived 71-year-old member Frank Schmidt when he had a heart attack and stopped breathing while sitting next to one of the club’s machines. Trainers revived Schmidt by administering CPR/AED until EMTs arrived on the scene and rushed Schmidt to Westchester Medical Center.
“If this patient didn’t get attention before our arrival, he wouldn’t have made it,” one of the EMTs said. Later, the EMTs returned to retrieve the names of the hero trainers, Melanie Scala and Deb Maher, so they could be honored. Several others at the scene were also credited with reviving Schmidt, including Paul, Dom, Jeanine, Phil, the entire Somers staff and a nurse who happened to be in the club.
“I’m pleased to report that our member, Frank Schmidt, is recovering and doing well,” NYSC CEO Alex Alimanestianu said. “Providing a safe environment for our members is a top priority and I’m extremely proud of how our club team handled the situation and put their professional life-saving training into action. Today, all of TSI honors and thanks them for their responsiveness and heroism under extreme circumstances, and for saving a life.”
