Tai Chi may have better health benefits than people once expected. In a recent study, researchers at the University School of Medicine in Boston, found that the ancient Chinese practice may lead to improvements in pain, function and even mental health for people suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. The benefits of the exercise showed lasting effects up to a year after the person had stopped using the exercise.
The group involved in the research found that after 12 weeks of practice, the pain had improved by 75 percent. Tai Chi was found to show an improved quality of life and a decrease in depression and anxiety. Osteoarthritis has been found in more and more patients as the population ages. The disease of the knee is painful and can be disabling.
