An Outsider’s Perspective

This week, “Inside the Club,” will feature Club Solutions Magazine’s Assistant Editor, Rachel Zabonick. Rachel joined the Club Solutions team in January 2012.

An Outsider’s Perspective

I joined the Club Solutions Magazine team in January of this year. Previously, I did not possess much experience with the fitness industry, other than as a member of a fitness club or two. Since becoming the Assistant Editor, man has my perspective changed! Here is an outsider, turned insider’s, perspective on the health and fitness industry.

1.     Club owners, operators and employees love what they do! As a journalist, I’ve never spoken with individuals this overjoyed to talk about their work. Almost every person I’ve talked to in the industry has been more than willing to answer my many phone calls and e-mails, at any hour of the day. To me, it has been a breath of fresh air.

2.     Not only do clubs love what they do, they love their members. One of my jobs as Assistant Editor is to write a monthly feature called “The Member Experience.” Each month, I find it hard to choose what stories to write about, as clubs usually have a multitude of members they’re proud of and eager to show off. Stayed tuned for the September issue — I’ll be covering a member who climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with his 12-year-old son.

3.     America needs you. Now more than ever, with the obesity crisis being a much talked about issue, the health and fitness industry is needed. Clubs have the ability, and the resources, to make a positive impact on the lives of many Americans, young and old. And you know it! I love reading about and covering clubs who make an effort to improve the quality of their local communities, and that’s almost all of you.

I’m sure the longer I’m a part of the industry the more I’ll learn, but so far, I like what I see. Know that your passion for the industry has inspired a newcomer, who feels blessed to have changed her perspective from one that was outside the industry, to within it.
