Recently, I spoke with Suzy Boerboom, the co-founder of the Welcyon franchise. Welcyon clubs are for people age 50 and over, and specifically cater to senior’s needs. There are no treadmills or loud music within the clubs, in order to cut down on noise, and a host of classes and programs available to build upon senior’s social connectivity.
News station WHAM13 recently reported that seniors in Chili, N.Y., are flocking to gyms by the hundreds. According to WHAM13 reporter Kelsie Smith, “Many are participating in Medicare advantage programs like the Silver&Fit program through Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Silver Sneakers through MVP. Members get deeply discounted rates on a membership, and classes keep them coming every week.”
Taking this into consideration, below are some group fitness classes — with links to their websites — you could start offering that are targeted towards baby boomers.
- SilverSneakers® Muscular Strength & Range of Movement
- SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit
- SilverSneakers® CardioFit
- SilverSneakers® YogaStretch
- SilverSneakers® SilverSplash®
If seniors do start flocking to your club, such as was the case with the club in Chili, N.Y., and Suzy Boerboom’s Welcyon clubs, consider making sure seniors feel safe in the club environment. If a senior comes into your facility wanting to join, take some extra time with them, so you can up their comfort level as much as possible.
