Cybex International, a leading manufacturer of premium exercise equipment, has announced it was awarded two new patents in January for the Cybex Eagle Row and the Cybex Bravo All-In-One Machine. The prosecution of one of these patents resulted in a ruling which has changed the precedent for how patents are viewed in certain areas. Cybex has now received over 90 patents since its inception, showcasing the company’s leadership position in fitness.
“Our passion for exercise science has allowed us to create equipment that is at the forefront of innovation,” said Ray Giannelli, the senior vice president of research and development at Cybex. “These two patents recognize our dedication to the development of state-of-the-art technology for our elite products, and the ruling by the court of appeals protects that intellectual property.”
The first patent was applied for in March of 2003 when the Cybex Eagle line of equipment was initially launched. After progressing through each level of the appeal process over the course of seven years, the highest United States Court of Appeals validated the innovation of the technology behind the Cybex Eagle Row on January 13, 2014. The Federal Circuit court ruled that the machine could only be assessed based on its intended form of use, while previous examinations had assessed it based only on a theorized use of a prior chest press machine as a row machine. This ruling has set the precedent for future Cybex patents.
Following the Federal Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision, Cybex was awarded a second patent on January 29, 2014 for two separate revolutionary features — the Progressive Stabilization Pad and the Cable Width Adjustment, both in the Bravo All-In-One design. The Patent Office’s own Trial and Appeal Board ruled that the Bravo All-In-One is the only machine on the market to allow users to incrementally modify the stabilization process or configure innumerable height and width cable configurations to enhance core body strength.
The Cybex product line is designed using exercise science to reflect the natural movement of the human body. Led by the Cybex Research Institute, Cybex fitness equipment is engineered to produce optimal results for users from the first-time exerciser to the professional athlete. Cybex designs and builds its products in the U.S. for a wide range of facilities, from commercial health clubs to home gyms, in more than 85 countries worldwide.
I am involved with a private design think tank group,working on emerging cutting edge strength/rehab concepts and i can say that there is really nothing that cybex does that is cutting edge with end product…..it is mostly an overdose of hardware.
“The Cybex product line is designed using exercise science to reflect the natural movement of the human body. Led by the Cybex Research Institute, Cybex fitness equipment is engineered to produce optimal results for users from the first-time exerciser to the professional athlete”;
this is highly misleading;prof athletes engage in/train with performance parameters that usually go beyond those of first time users. In order to keep costs down,like any strength machine builder,they are severely restricted in what they can bring to market,and therefore,dont bring much more to the market than any other company;their only big advantage is brand status;that would be about it.
Ray G is a real smart guy,no doubt,but that is ironically irrelevant,because even IF he was qualified to be employed with NASA,lets not forget that he nowhere near that org,….he is part of an industry having dreadfully tight restrictions on what can be brought to market,a market that is still waiting for a weightstack machine allowing anytime change in resistance,even if it only serves as something new and interesting.
thx,scott
