For the 20th year in a row, Sport&Health held its “Workout for a Cure” group fitness event at its clubs in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. “We’ve finally reached our half a million mark,” said Nancy Terry, the senior vice president of marketing for Sport&Health.
Over the last 20 years, Sport&Health’s “Workout for a Cure” events have cumulatively raised $500,000 for Komen for the Cure. All proceeds go directly to Susan G. Komen, and this year was especially impressive. In just one day, on March 22, 2014, Sport&Health raised $45,000 alone.
The event was an all-day group fitness extravaganza. Members and guests paid a $25-entry fee at the door, and had access to a full day of various classes, ranging from cycle classes and basketball challenges, to BODYPUMP and Zumba. “All 22 locations participated,” said Terry. “So we had about 2,000 participants all together.”
Terry attributed the success to the coordinator of “Workout for a Cure,” Teri Bothwell, the corporate group fitness director of Sport&Health. “She’s been running this since day one,” said Terry. “It’s thanks to all of the fitness directors who led the event.” Bothwell is in charge of everything from coordinating the instructors to choosing the class schedules for each location.
Sport&Health’s decision to sponsor Susan G. Komen was sparked 20 years ago when a member passed away from breast cancer. “The members came together at the Lake Forest location,” said Terry. “[The event] got so popular we expanded it out and it became an annual event.”
The event is an opportunity for the community to show their support. Local partners provide food and drinks, and all participants receive a hot pink shirt as a thank you.
According to Terry, participating Sport&Health staff had a good time preparing for the big day. “They pink up the clubs,” said Terry. “It’s a really fun day, to celebrate a great cause.”
