Save the Date: The 15th annual BASH for Augie’s Quest will take place March 20th in San Diego, California. Tickets can be purchased at augiesquest.org/bash.
Founded by Augie and Lynne Nieto, Augie’s Quest is dedicated to funding treatments and cures for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Augie was diagnosed with ALS in 2005.
“ALS is curable, it’s just underfunded,” wrote Augie. “Our quest is to make sure we find a cure for ALS in our lifetimes. Your support will give to the most promising and innovative ALS science and research today — and spread new hope for countless people living with ALS, their families, caregivers and friends. ”
According to Augie, great strides have been made in ALS research, thanks in part to the fitness industry’s support. For example:
- In January 2020, Augie’s Quest announced the new Augie’s Quest Translational Research Center, housed within the ALS Therapy Development Institute’s (ALS TDI) laboratory. Through this partnership, the organization is able to better partner with ALS patients — a key element to uncovering effective therapies for this disease. Scientists will learn about ALS from people with ALS. By collecting and studying clinical data and samples, ALS TDI’s aim is to better understand the causes of ALS and drivers of ALS progression. This work is made possible through the generosity of Augie’s Quest donors like you.
- Augie Nieto announced the successful completion of a Phase 1 safety and pharmacokinetic study of AT-1501, a potential therapy developed with funding from Augie’s Quest, and the FDA-approved Phase 2 study will begin in early 2020. In addition to seeing potential for the ALS community, AT-1501 shows promise in autoimmune diseases and transplant rejection.
- “The Age of A.I.” is an eight-part documentary series hosted by Robert Downey Jr. covering the ways artificial intelligence, machine learning and neural networks will change the world. In its second episode, the documentary features research partner, ALS TDI and Titans NFL star Tim Shaw, who is living with ALS. Through the Precision Medicine Program funded by Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS, Google is taking the data to make it possible for Shaw to continue to communicate.
“We wholeheartedly believe ALS is a problem we can solve,” continued Augie. “That’s why your generous donations to Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS are so critical. When we work together, we can defeat ALS.”
