Wise Words: Kory Angelin on Coaching Up Your Staff

Kory Angelin, the president of a rapidly expanding IV vitamin therapy franchise, The DRIPBaR, shares four essential tips for effectively coaching up your staff to enhance their performance rather than pushing them out. Angelin’s first tip emphasizes setting clear goals and expectations to provide employees with a concrete understanding of what they need to achieve, such as specific revenue targets. This clarity aids in driving productive one-on-one meetings.

The second tip advocates for investing time in these one-on-one sessions, which are vital for staff support. Angelin highlights the importance of these interactions, noting that lack of support is a leading reason employees leave their jobs. He suggests regular brief meetings to tackle challenges, like handling customer objections, through role-playing exercises.

Leading by example is Angelin’s third tip, which he deems crucial for management. He encourages managers to actively participate in the same tasks they assign to their staff, such as making customer calls during call drives. This not only shows commitment but also earns the staff’s respect and appreciation.

The final tip focuses on the power of recognition and rewards. Angelin points out that employees often associate being called to the manager’s office with negative feedback. He advises turning this around by using such opportunities to praise and acknowledge their achievements, no matter how small.

According to Angelin, consistent application of these strategies will result in fewer staff members being coached out and more being developed effectively, leading to longer employee retention.
