Enjoy Being at Work

Last week I thought it would be fun to write my blog about the top 10 things to say to your Siri as a club owner. However, after further discussion with a Siri, I discovered that it wasn’t as funny as I once thought. Although, I did discover that Siri will take a lot of grief. I’m assuming that over a period of time, the relationship you develop with badgering your new iPhone 4s will translate into a comfortable relationship.

Relationships are the essence of our being. “Siri, help me with relationships.”

For some reason Siri sends me inappropriate phone numbers when I ask for assistance with relationships. Clearly, Apple didn’t fully understand the power of a relationship when developing Siri.

In your club, relationship building should be number one. If you are a GM and you’ve been in your office all morning sending e-mails and getting caught up on corporate mumbo jumbo, take a step out and talk to some of your employees. Don’t quiz them on what they did wrong when conversing with a customer – rather, spend a moment to ask them about their morning.

A lot of the time we get so wrapped up in work that we don’t take the time to get to know our employees. We develop a, “Look what you did wrong,” relationship. That’s not the type of relationship anyone wants.

You don’t want to be the bad cop patrolling your employees at work. We spend a ton of time at work – it shouldn’t be a place we dread going.

At the Club Solutions office we try and spend time talking about anything other than work for at least a little while. Each of our meetings somehow transition into the popular sport of the season, or new television shows. Sometime you should send Ali Cicerchi an e-mail (our assistant editor at ali@clubsolutionsmagazine.com) and ask her how she feels about being the only female in an office full of guys that enjoy sports – you might get a mild dissertation.

However, these discussions keep us relaxed at work. We enjoy going to the office as much as we enjoy leaving at 5. Ok, well maybe not as much, but it’s a good place to be for eight hours. We even try to vary our conversations to make Ali feel at home. She enjoys Italian cuisine and bashing The (yeah right) Ohio State.

The point is to develop relationships with your employees. Coming to work should be a place that people mildly enjoy being on a regular basis. Remember, you won’t get Boss of the Year if you’re a tyrant – unless you use your tyrant abilities to force your employees to vote you in as Boss of the Year.

Also, our Star Trac Spinner® Blade promotion on Facebook just came to an end with Karen Sevener as our winner. If you aren’t Karen, I’m sorry, but we have another chance for you to win! Log onto your Facebook, go to the Club Solutions Magazine Facebook Page and click the “Like” button. That’s all you have to do! You could win a Special Edition Augie’s Quest Ab Coaster!
