Nutrition and fitness go hand in hand-and bringing nutrition awareness to your club can benefit members’ long-term goals.

Obesity rates in America are on the rise. Statistics say that over 66% of adults are overweight and 31% of Americans are considered obese. Numbers like this make it no surprise that the diet and supplement industry has grown to over a $100 Billion. America is becoming obsessed with nutrition and the thought of losing weight. Health clubs can easily profit from this trend and use it to market and retain members.

Most members join your club to lose weight. We all know that exercise alone isn’t the cure all answer to the battle of the bulge problem. Even if you do weight training four times a week, if your members still make poor eating choices, the only results they are going to see is firmer muscles pushing their fat up and making it more noticeable.

However, you can help your members make healthy eating choices both in and out of your club and make a healthy profit for yourself, while dramatically improving the satisfaction your members have with the club experience. Why would you want your members leaving your club to spend their money with nutrition and weight loss centers? You can provide these products and services for them and become their one-stop fitness solution.

The following services can be bundled or priced separately to your members:

Body Composition Scores and Metabolic Testing
Body fat composition is a very real number that can drastically motivate your members to get started and spend the additional money on the nutrition/weight management program you offer. In order for your members to feel like they are making progress with the time and money they are spending at your club, you need to give them the opportunity to see measurable results. Give them a schedule to recheck their body composition weekly. This will keep them coming back to the club on a regular basis and give you the opportunity to have your staff encourage them and build lasting relationships.

Metabolic testing is another service that you can offer. Showing and explaining to a member about their metabolic rate will certainly motivate them to work out and understand the importance of making healthy food choices. Without understanding your member’s individual metabolic workings it is impossible to deliver a customized nutrition solution.

Nutrition and Meal Planning
Nutrition and meal planning offers your members are a great way to enhance the success of their workout routine, while enhancing the profit of your club. This also offers a great way to benefit and support your members during the time they are not in your club and helps to encourage their continued membership. Many vendors who offer these solutions to health clubs have programs that allow members to track their progress online. Most programs also include shopping lists and recipes. Nutrition and meal planning is not only a great revenue stream for your club but it is a great marketing and retention tool as well.

Nutraceuticals and Supplements
Diet pills, protein drinks, meal replacement bars, and other sports and health related products are big business. There are also many products available for muscle and joint pain that have clinical results claiming they can help your members recover more quickly from their workouts and keep them coming back to your club.

There are many different ways to offer these products to your members. You can keep an inventory of several items on hand, supply brochures at the front desk and even special order specialty items. Many suppliers offer wholesale pricing to health clubs, which will allow you to make a decent profit and keep more of your members’ nutrition dollars in your club. Also check out some ecommerce providers that will pay you commission and allow you to brand the ‘store site’ online.

Smoothie bars
Adding a smoothie bar to your club can generate great profits and provide a social gathering place for your members. Social interaction between your members can go a long way to making them feel more comfortable kariann Windisch
