More than 100 new Planet Fitness facilities are slated to open within 2012. The growing fitness company kicked off the New Year by opening its 500th location in Illinois, on Jan. 16, 2012.
In terms of number of units, Planet Fitness is on pace this year to become the number one health club company in the United States, reported MarketWatch. Planet Fitness already has the largest overall membership — almost 3.5 million members total in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Planet Fitness began with just four gyms in New Hampshire when the company launched franchising in 2003.
“I thought at the time that maybe we’d end up the biggest loser,” said Planet Fitness co-founder Michael Grondahl. “But 500 gyms ain’t half bad.”
