Planet Fitness Creates “Pat on the Back” Generator

Planet Fitness has developed a custom-built “Pat on the Back (POTB)” generator as part of its Pat on the Back social campaign, to spread positivity and encouragement amongst Planet Fitness members.

Hosted on Facebook and Twitter, the POTB generator gives members the opportunity to send words of encouragement on anything from fitness to life goals. People can choose from pre-written POTBs or can create text of their own. In addition, the generator has the capability for people to upload photos of friends and family they’d like to “Pat on the Back.”

“Planet Fitness stands for maintaining a judgment-free environment that’s all about encouragement and comfort,” said Eric Vaden, the VP of marketing for Planet Fitness. “What better way to spread encouragement than sharing virtual pats on the back for the simplest things in life, fitness related or not.”

The campaign launched September 1, 2012. When 20,000 POTBs have been sent, Planet Fitness will throw cupcake parties at all Planet Fitness locations to celebrate. So far, over 6,000 POTBs have been sent by members.

After 20,000 POTBs have been sent, Planet Fitness will continue to make use of the POTB generator. “The cupcake party is the first step towards celebrating the POTBs shared thus far,” explained Vaden. “But there’s no reason to stop sharing the fun and encouragement. The app will continue to allow people to share POTBs after the cupcake ‘party’s over.’ Because, why not?”
