The Powerhouse Gym in downtown Tampa Bay, Fla. has partnered with GENERGY to offer human performance training to its members, via GENERGY’s first-ever partnership with a fitness club. GENERGY’s services include metabolic screenings, biomechanical assessments, nutrition counseling, functional movement screenings and more, made newly accessible to Powerhouse Gym members through the partnership. After a screening, the GENERGY and Powerhouse team tailor a training program for members based off of the results.
“In the past, anyone who wanted this kind of testing would have had to go to a university or a hospital,” said Matt Midyett, the co-owner of Powerhouse Gym in Tampa Bay. “Now, people can come to us to see exactly how their body is working. Other tests implemented by clubs were too general. GENERGY’s tests leave all the guesswork out. You can tell exactly what members are burning — muscle, sugars, fat, how many calories. It’s a very accurate reading.”
Ryan Bruggeman, the president of GENERGY, explained how this is beneficial to members. “Human performance training originated with athletes who wanted to take their performance to another level,” explained Bruggeman. “For the normal person, we use human performance training to tailor their workouts and diet specifically to what they’re working towards, whether it be increased muscle mass, weight loss, etc. The tests provide a complete diagnostic of how a client works, and we can tailor a program specifically to their needs.”
According to Midyett, the GENERGY program has garnered excitement inside, and outside the gym. When the program was first implemented, GENERGY trainers conducted biomechanical screenings on the gym floor, creating curiosity and excitement amongst members. In addition, the program has brought allure to Powerhouse from professional athletes. “People are always trying to get more technical and scientific,” said Midyett. “We saw a niche for that. As a result, we’re seeing a lot of professional athletes in here, working in the off season.”
To further garner interest in the program, a biomechanical screening is offered complimentary to all Powerhouse Gym members. During the screening, trainers can discuss solutions to any issues they discover, such as injuries or weaknesses. In the process, this will hopefully increase the chances that members sign up for the program. “The main benefit for members is to answer a lot of unanswered questions,” said Bruggeman. “Human performance training tells us what’s going on internally — how many calories they’re burning, what’s going on metabolically and more.”
According to Midyett, GENERGY worked closely with Powerhouse Gym and its trainers to make the addition of the program to the club go as smoothly as possible. Midyett hopes to make the club a future showcase for GENERGY and its program services. “We have plans in place to expand and create a showcase area, where presentations of the screenings and tests can be held,” he said. “When people see that, they’re going to say, ‘wow,’ and ask how they can get involved.”
