The fitness landscape is vast — while some exercisers prefer fun, mid-intensity workouts such as Zumba, others gravitate towards the other end of the spectrum, towards high-intensity workouts like adventure races and CrossFit.
Here, Jacque Crockford, an exercise physiologist and education specialist for the American Council on Exercise (ACE), shares her thoughts on extreme fitness trends and how to ensure all exercisers have a place in your club.
CS: What are your thoughts on extreme fitness trends?
JC: It is the mission at ACE to help all people live their most fit lives. Although high-intensity training may not be safe for all people, for those that do enjoy it, this style of training — when balanced with proper recovery and other forms of physical activity — is a small step toward improving the overall health of our country.
CS: Why do you think some individuals are drawn to these types of workouts?
JC: Many of these types of workouts involve both competition with yourself and with others. For former athletes or those that like to train like athletes, this can be a big motivational draw.
CS: What would you say to those that think going to extreme forms of fitness is the only way they’ll see results?
JC: Fitness, just like nutrition, is very personal. You have to find what works for you and your body. This includes finding a balance between high-intensity exercise, flexibility/mobility training, relaxation/recovery and any other measures of fitness you might be looking to improve.
CS: Is there anything gyms can learn by looking at the extreme fitness trend?
JC: CrossFit has created a very successful culture. This can be done within any fitness facility or small group style training group. Invite camaraderie and friendly competition along with safe effective programming and you’ll have a winning combination.
