The total membership reach has exceeded 350,000 members.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with our first year results,” said Emre Sokullu, the founder and CEO. “With more customers in the pipeline, our membership reach will rise to 600,000 by the end of this year, with next year’s modest goal being 3 million members.”
To achieve this next milestone, GymGroups has added a freemium tier, allowing anyone to create a private social network for their gym. While paid customers have the benefit of iBeacon technology to “check-in” at machines as well as advanced analytics tools, free networks created by regular gym members provide the basic social features sought by people who go to the gym on a regular basis.
“Free networks will give the entry-level benefits of our platform at no cost to the gym-goers. We anticipate that forward-thinking gyms, after seeing our member adoption rates, will elevate their offerings,” explained Sokullu, noting that adoption rates range between 50% to 90%.
“This model is very effective with bigger gyms and lets them catch up with new players such as SoulCycle and Crossfits, helping them to foster a sense of community,” added Neesha Sridhar, the director of marketing.
Currently, over 30,000 monthly active GymGroups users check in to machines, watch exercise videos, and post content, photos and videos to the newsfeed. Club members can also send private messages as well as form teams and groups based on their goals, interests, and professional backgrounds.
Fun Fact: 1 out of 10 members add their spouses to the GymGroups network.
GymGroups is on the verge of tracking 10,000 pieces of gym equipment worldwide, possibly one of the largest iBeacon networks in existence today.
Formerly known as GROU.PS, the company was recently re-branded as GymGroups, in an effort to focus more on health & fitness, its best performing category.
