A Passion for Precision Meets Body Composition Analysis

secaMedical Body Composition Analysis — Precision, accuracy and reproducibility is everything when assessing your members.

Benchmarks are set when experience and passion for precision meets body analysis. The result is the seca medical Body Composition Analyzer, or seca mBCA for short. It is the only body composition analyzer designed for medical use, and validated to the Four Compartment Model — the gold standard for fat mass calculation.

Drew Miller of Courthouse Fitness began using the seca medical Body Composition Analyzer (mBCA 514) a few years ago, and since has incorporated it into five facilities. Here he shares the product’s benefits.

CS: Why did you choose the seca mBCA 514 over other competing BIA devices?

DM: We chose the seca mBCA 514 because it is the best device that produces accurate and repeatable results. Before the seca mBCA, we invested in Bod Pods because accuracy is very important to us.  Also, the fact that the seca mBCA 514 is the only four compartment model on the market helped make the decision to purchase much easier for us.

CS: You replaced the BOD POD at five of your clubs with the seca mBCA 514 – what advantages does the mBCA provide over that device?

DM: Once we were able to verify that the seca mBCA 514 was as accurate, if not more accurate then the Bod Pod, there were several advantages to switching. First, testing on the seca mBCA 514 is much less intimidating for new exercisers. Convincing people to test in the Bod Pod in swimsuit or underwear required a lot of work. Now, we even test prospective members while on a club tour. Members and staff have definitely enjoyed switching over to the seca mBCA 514.

CS: The seca mBCA 514 has proven to be a revenue stream for clubs interested in offering body composition assessments to their members. Have you found this to be the case for your facilities?

DM: Absolutely. Not only do we sell individual tests to individual members and non-members, but we include the seca mBCA 514 in our personal training and other programs. Members appreciate the value of the test and it is not overwhelming, so our staff can do testing on the seca mBCA at any time.

CS: The seca mBCA is the only body composition analyzer designed for medical use and validated to the Four Compartment Model – the gold standard for fat mass calculation How important are the roles of precision, accuracy and reproducibility when assessing your members body composition?

DM: I cannot overstate this — it is everything for us. Members trust us to deliver results. If we cannot trust the numbers on the device, then members cannot trust that we are helping them get the results they desire. Inaccurate results ultimately reflect poorly on us. If you cannot trust the numbers, then you shouldn’t be testing at all. When we were looking into purchasing our first mBCA 514, the seca Product Specialist did a fantastic job of explaining how the seca mBCA  was the best device for delivering precise, accurate, and repeatable test results.

CS: How has the seca mBCA 514 helped to differentiate Courthouse Fitness from other health clubs?

DM: Members and prospective members are becoming more savvy and sophisticated all the time. In that, members now want to know how much fat they are losing and how much muscle or lean mass they are gaining.  They simply are not as interested in their scale weight as they used to be. And that is a great thing. Most of the other health clubs have cheap BIA equipment that is simply not accurate. We have conversations all the time with members of other gyms who want to test on the mBCA 514 because they actually want to know what their “true body composition is.” Overall, the seca mBCA helps communicate how serious we are in our desire to deliver real results for our members.
