In this video interview, Chris Smith, the president and CEO of Fitness World, discusses fitness opportunities and trends.

Smith highlighted the prevailing strength of the strength training trend within the industry. He noted that societal perspectives on fitness, especially among women, are evolving from a focus on being slim to becoming strong. This shift has forced gym operators to rethink equipment types and facility layouts to accommodate the new demand for strength training.

Addressing the role of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, such as Ozempic, Smith expressed skepticism surrounding their widespread use. He warned about potential side effects and the need for a comprehensive approach to health that includes strength training to counter muscle wasting associated with these drugs.

Personal training, contrary to some opinions suggesting its decline, was robustly defended by Smith, particularly referencing its vibrancy in British Columbia. He argued that personal training is far from obsolete; rather, it thrives when integrated correctly into a gym’s culture and member journey.

Smith also addressed the growing significance of recovery trends within the fitness industry. He emphasized that recovery is not just a passing trend but a crucial aspect of a modern gym’s offerings, which aligns with the broader wellness needs of gym members.

Smith highlighted the strategic investments his company has made in recovery technologies, which have not only enhanced the overall member experience but also increased the average membership tenure.

Conclusively, Smith remains optimistic about the industry’s direction, emphasizing the continuous opportunity for growth and innovation in fitness.
