Over the course of the day, it’s easy to get so caught up in your list of things to do that you forget to even say “hello” to your staff or coworkers, let alone bond with them. It even happens at Club Solutions, which is why we created a unique opportunity for our team to bond and have fun with each other on a regular basis.
Over the course of four weeks, my coworkers and I write good, funny or positive things that happened in the office onto a Post-it note and place it into a jar. At the end of the four weeks, the entire team then goes out to lunch. After we’ve ordered, we pass the jar around and read the notes aloud.
It’s a blast. Examples of notes range from more serious recaps such as “Finished the April 2014 issue” to silly ones, such as “It’s Carrie’s birthday today – she’s now a year wiser, which is a good thing!” To be honest, most of the notes are silly, but regardless, we all have a great time, and end the meeting with more appreciation for one another.
Consider doing something similar with your club staff. At Club Solutions, the results have involved a boost in morale, better group camaraderie and an improved work environment. By taking note of the good, funny or positive things that happen in an office — or any work environment — it’s a lot easier to forget the bad (for example, a difficult client, disgruntled member, etc.).
Fostering team camaraderie doesn’t just affect employees — it affects organizations as well. Employees are less likely to leave a job where they not only respect their coworkers, but also like them. This can result in fewer turnovers and less time spent on training new employees.
Oh, and don’t forget that as a club owner or team leader, you should be involved with team building exercises as well. At Club Solutions, everyone on the staff contributes to the Post-it note jar, from interns to the publisher.
