Keeping Gym Equipment in Good Shape

There’s no doubt about it — the cardio and strength equipment in a busy fitness center really gets a workout.

This equipment is used day in and day out by gym members of a variety of sizes and strengths, each adjusting the equipment to the settings, speed and weights that are right for them. With such heavy usage, it’s critical for gym owners to make sure their equipment is properly maintained and safe for users. Poorly maintained equipment can lead to costly repairs, member injuries, reputation damage and more.

To ensure this equipment is safe for users, gym management should implement proper preventative inspection protocols. Have professional maintenance check ups on equipment two times a year. For some leased equipment, regular maintenance could be included in the purchase package.

Also, third party specialists are available to conduct regular maintenance checks. As an extra layer of prevention, gym owners can train their maintenance staff on the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations so they can also keep an eye out for any abnormalities.

In addition to the regular maintenance, daily inspections should be implemented. During daily cleanings, staff should be sure to:

  • Check cables and pins in strength equipment.
  • Visually inspect all treads and other areas on cardio equipment.
  • Sign a checklist after the work to verify the inspections were completed.

Further, both surface and deep cleanings can help keep up the appearance of the gym, and prevent dust and debris from building up. Such dust and debris can impact the performance of equipment, not to mention its life expectancy.

Finally, if gym equipment is reported as broken or compromised in any way, gym owners should ensure protocols are in place to keep members off that equipment. Staff should be required to place permanent signage on the equipment or, ideally, remove it from the floor until it can go through full, proper inspection and repair, and is cleared for service.

By implementing a good preventative inspection protocol and by keeping an eye out for faulty equipment, gym management and staff can help to keep their members safe, and their gym in good operation.
