Finding the right candidate for your facility can sometimes be challenging, but by utilizing some of these tips below you can definitely narrow down the search field:
• Initial greeting — a big smile, a firm handshake and a pleasant personality are some key qualities that your candidate should possess. As our opinion of someone is generally formed in the first 30 seconds, first impressions are sometimes the most important.
• Resume — having a professional resume regardless of their experience or education is important. It shows preparation and a conscience effort that will also be communicated to potential clients.
• Professional attire — I cannot tell you how many interviews I have conducted that began with me thinking, “Does he/she know what they look like?” I have spent more time wondering if the person in front of me was interviewing for a job or trying to become a model in a high fashion store.
• Education — regardless of whatever education level your candidate has (graduate, post- grad, NCCA certifications or advanced certification) having some shows that the candidate studied and committed to this field and endeavor as a personal trainer.
• Personality — the one thing you cannot teach and cannot fix. No matter what other qualities they possess, if the candidate’s personality is not vibrant, welcoming and engaging, pass on that candidate altogether.
These are just a couple of quick tips when interviewing a new trainer.
