A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden revealed that being fit during youth could lead to a lower risk of suicide later in life.
According to the report, “Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, have been able to use a study of 1,136,527 Swedish men to show that there is a link between exercising as a young person and a reduced risk of suicidal behavior later in life.”
Unfortunately, access to youth fitness programs and activities in schools has become increasingly more limited. When budget cuts occur, recreational activities may be the first to go.
This is where health clubs can step up, and take the opportunity to fill in any gaps found in youth fitness opportunities across the U.S.
“Kids aren’t getting the physical fitness they need, and they need to do something that makes them feel good about themselves,” said Elizabeth Burkhard, the assistant program director of World Gym in Wantagh, N.Y. “Fitness does that.”
Recognizing the importance of offering youth fitness options in its community, World Gym Wantagh turned to Parisi Speed School in order to bolster its youth fitness programming. A comprehensive franchise offering programming for kids age 7 and up, the program has brought a myriad of positive results to World Gym Wantagh since its implementation in August of 2012.
“It’s been great,” said Burkhard. “It gives kids self confidence and helps them feel good about themselves.”
World Gym Wantagh’s Parisi program boasts over 140 participants, and Burkhard said that number grows each week. “Our classes are constantly maxed out, and every week we’re getting new members,” she explained.
Additionally, the program has generated interest amongst local high schools looking to improve student’s athleticism. “We’ve had an amazing response from the community,” said Burkhard.
Burkhard explained that as a franchise, Parisi Speed School provides all the tools necessary to boast a successful program. “It’s a turn-key operation,” she said. “If you follow Parisi’s plan and use the tools they provide you, you’ll be fine.”
In addition to Parisi Speed School, World Gym Wantagh holds open gyms two to three days a week, where children can participate in recreational activities. A kid’s section of the gym also sports equipment suitable for children’s use.
Burkhard believes it’s a missed opportunity if clubs fail to offer youth fitness options. “I think it’s very important,” she said. According to Burkhard, local youth have responded especially well to the Parisi Speed School. “They love it,” she said.
