Active Sports Clubs, the new health club brand launched late last year, has acquired the majority of Club One’s Bay Area health clubs and nationwide fitness management assets, including its community center, hospital and corporate fitness and wellness management operations.
Active Sports Clubs was founded by Jill Kinney (Club One’s co-founder), Bill McBride (the former president and COO of Club One) and Carey White (the former CFO of Club One). Similar to their former roles with Club One, Jill Kinney serves as Active Sports Clubs’ chairman, Bill McBride is acting president and CEO, and Carey White is CFO.
Kinney founded Club One with her husband John, stepping away from the company in 2007 to launch Clubsource, a development company specializing in community centers. Active Sports Clubs is her latest project, recently bolstered by the acquisition of Club One’s Bay Area assets.
As a result of the acquisition, Active Sports Clubs is working in partnership with Club One to seamlessly transition operations, including retaining all of Club One’s site-level employees. According to Active Sports Clubs, approximately 2,400 jobs will remain intact. Additionally, Active Sports Clubs will assume approximately 145,000 members across its commercial health club, community, medical fitness and corporate fitness centers with minimal disruption.
For the time being, Active Sports Clubs will continue to operate the Bay Area health clubs under the Club One Fitness brand. Over time, each location will be evaluated for site-specific improvement plans, if necessary.
