Gold’s Gym has signed an agreement to open a number of new gyms in Australia. According to the company, the deal was signed in the fourth quarter of 2013 and is the largest development agreement outside of the U.S. in Gold’s Gym history.
“We could not be more thrilled to be expanding in Australia with this 10-year agreement,” said Tim Hicks, the SVP of franchising for Gold’s Gym, in a press release. “We are excited to bring to the Australian market the high caliber of service and commitment Gold’s Gym is known for, both stateside and across the world, from our best-in-class trainers to our top-of-the-line equipment and facilities.”
Gold’s Gym expects to open a minimum of 50 gyms in Australia over the next 10 years. Currently, there are two existing gyms in Australia — in Fyshwick and Gungahlin, Australia — which opened in March and June of 2013, respectively.
Gold’s Gym isn’t the first U.S. company to expand overseas to Australia. In November 2012, Snap Fitness announced it had opened its 100th location in the country. UFC Gym opened its first Australian location — and its first international one — in February 2013.
“The Gold’s Gym name is well known throughout Australia,” said Leigh Taylforth, Gold’s Gym’s Master Franchisee for Australia, in the press release. “With a brand as synonymous with fitness as Gold’s Gym, we are very confident that we will be hugely successful.”
