The Bay Club Company (“Bay Club”) recently announced it has expanded its presence in Southern California with the acquisition of Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan Beach, for $73 million. According to Bay Club, the company has four points of focus — fitness, sports, hospitality and family — and Manhattan Country Club will complement those points.
This news follows the 2015 acquisition of 11 Spectrum Athletic Clubs, and the 2016 acquisitions of Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and Boulder Ridge Golf Club.
In the last 10 years, Manhattan Country Club has undergone many major renovations, resulting in it being one of the premier tennis, swim and hospitality facilities in the Los Angeles marketplace. Highlights include:
- a 6,000-square-foot fitness and group exercise facility
- 18 hard-surface tennis courts
- Paddle tennis
- Squash
- Racquetball courts
- 25-meter outdoor swimming pool
- The Poolside Bar + Grill
- Atrium + Terrace
- The Bar
- The Wine Lounge
“We continually seek out strategic opportunities that add value and upgrade our membership experience,” said Matthew Stevens, the Bay Club’s president, in a press release. “Manhattan Country Club’s state-of-the-art amenities and offerings perfectly complement those found at our swim and tennis clubs, sports resorts and golf and country clubs.”
The company operates 23 locations across California, and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Bay Club is known for its “sports resort model,” which include anywhere from 16 to 18 indoor/outdoor tennis courts, two to four swimming pools, and 60,000 to 80,000 square feet of clubhouse amenities.
The Bay Club Company’s headquarters lie in San Francisco, California, and the company classifies itself as an active lifestyle and hospitality enterprise with a network of modern country clubs that welcome more than 50,000 memberships. Campuses can be found within San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego. Bay Club employs more than 3,400 people.
