Mid-Life Obesity Effects Women’s Health

The British Medical Journal released a recent study that showed women who are overweight in their midlife could have extreme risks of chronic disease and cognitive impairment once they pass the age of 70. Women who are healthy in their midlife have good health once they pass 70.

In 1976, the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) started tracking more than 17,000 women with a mean age of 50. Of the women who lived to or past age 70, only 10 percent have reportedly been free of the 11 major chronic diseases the researchers followed. The research addresses two of the major trends in the U.S. that will have a major impact on public health – Americans living longer and Americans getting bigger; almost two thirds of the U.S. population is overweight and one third are obese.

The reports showed that obese women were 80 percent less likely to be in good health after age 70 than women who were lean. Women who were overweight at age 18 and gained around 22 pounds by age 50 were the least likely to remain healthy.

I absolutely concur with this article. What you do today, will affect you 15 – 20 years from now. The idea is to foresee what you want your health and life to be 20 years from now. I believe that gives you enough reason to Live Healthy Today.
