At the 2022 Club Solutions Leadership Retreat, fitness professionals gathered to form connections, have fun and tackle the biggest challenges facing our industry today.
One of the greatest things about gyms is not only do they help someone improve their health and wellness, they also serve as a source of community where people can make friends and build connections.
The Club Solutions Leadership Retreat is similar in this aspect. The event helps people improve the health and well-being of their businesses, but also provides a space in which they can form relationships with peers.
“My favorite part of the Club Solutions Leadership Retreat is by far the relationships built with industry leaders that last far beyond the event,” said Deb Heisler, a regional vice president for Active Wellness. “Knowing you have a network of professionals who are just a phone call or email away makes the time spent at the retreat invaluable. I would highly recommend the Club Solutions Leadership Retreat for anyone looking to move their business forward.”
This year’s Club Solutions Leadership Retreat took place September 7-9, 2022 at the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage in Rancho Mirage, California. It brought together 60-plus operators and 25 sponsors with the goal of creating a space where fitness professionals could address the most pressing issues facing our industry.
Roundtable topics included:
- Reaching the Other 80 Percent — Sponsored by CryoBuilt
- Leadership Strategies for Now and the Future
- Building Your Tech Stack — Sponsored by ROR Partners
- Attracting and Retaining Talent — Sponsored by ISSA
- Top Trends in Fitness
Each roundtable, moderated and led by Blair McHaney, the CEO of MXMetrics, encouraged attendees to dig deep to determine areas where their clubs and the industry could have the most impact.
Big ideas stemming from the roundtables included:
- The opportunity to draw people into fitness through passive “biohacks” such as cryotherapy. “I love the idea on how to reach the ‘other 80%’ by trying to engage people in more passive wellness activities like massage, compression boots or meditation to then entice them into more active wellness activities like strength training,” said Mark Beier, the general manager of Midtown Athletic Club Bannockburn.
- The potential to capitalize on what could be viewed as “negative” market conditions, such as inflation. “There are actually opportunities within a recession and with inflation, such as the opportunity to raise prices, which we have needed to do as an industry for a long time,” explained Greg Maurer, the vice president of fitness and education at Workout Anytime.
These are just two of many concepts teased out over the course of the event’s three-day schedule. In addition to the educational roundtables, attendees also enjoyed fun activities such as a “Lights, Camera, Action” movie-making icebreaker activity, sunrise hike and pool party, and demo times with event sponsors.
