Scott Gillespie On Opening a F45 Training Franchise

Scott Gillespie, the owner of Saco Sport & Fitness, shares on diversifying his portfolio by becoming a F45 Training franchisee.

Scott Gillespie purchased Saco Sport & Fitness, a large multipurpose fitness facility, in 1993. Since, the gym has become a mainstay in Saco, Maine, known for its welcoming environment and robust fitness offerings.

Twenty-nine years after purchasing Saco Sport & Fitness, Gillespie is now diversifying his portfolio with a new venture: becoming a franchisee of F45 Training. Plans are in place to open a studio in Portland, Maine.

Here, Gillespie shares on the decision, what attracted him to the F45 Training model and more.

What was behind the decision to open an F45 Training franchise?

It started four years ago when I researched the boutique studio segment for a presentation at IHRSA. During the research I came to respect many aspects of how studios operate. This includes the simplicity, the specialization in one type of exercise experience, the building of a strong community and the financial model. I also believe the real growth in our industry will be in finding various ways to provide content to users who do not want to or don’t have the knowledge or motivation to exercise on their own.

What attracted you to the F45 Training model in particular?

It started with the “F” of F45, which stands for “functional.” I have always been a strong believer in functional training. As a rock climber, skier, kayaker, golfer and hiker I enjoy how efficiently the model — the “45” in F45 is for 45 minutes — prepares the body for an active lifestyle. I also believe it is the best way to train the body for life, as the training is based on the ways our bodies are meant to move.

The unique method of content delivery using video and tech is another important differentiation, freeing up the coaches to guide, support and motivate our members to improve their experience and results. I also appreciate how F45 balances cardio and strength-based HIIT training to cover all bases. After researching many options, I came to believe F45 offers the best functional workout in the world.

What are you most excited about regarding this opportunity?

Beyond learning how to serve a specific segment of the fitness market and create a powerful and meaningful community, I am excited about the simplicity of the model compared to a full-service health club. I like the idea of diversifying my fitness business holdings as the financial model is very appealing.

What are your future plans for your F45 Training franchise? Do you have plans to open more?

Yes, I intend to open at least one more.

What else would you like to share about this news?

Coming out of the pandemic I believe there is a strong desire for health-minded people to reconnect with their communities in person. The F45 model does an exceptional job of doing that by making fitness fun, simple and providing great results.

Stay ahead in the fitness industry with exclusive updates!
