Ruben Mejia, the EVP, North America, of SportsArt America, shares eco-friendly practices to attract environmentally-conscious gym-goers and build a greener, more sustainable fitness facility.
Companies all over the country are feeling the pressure from young people to make the world a more sustainable place. Thirty two percent of adult Gen Z and 28% of millennials are already taking action to address climate change by donating money, volunteering, attending rallies or contacting an elected official.
Comprising just under half of the total U.S. population, Gen Z and millennials have the numbers to influence more than just politics.
For example, Gen Z and millennials also influence the fitness industry, representing 80% of all gym-goers. That means environmental friendliness is an essential factor when choosing a fitness facility. Sure, you can have bold branding and powerful promotions, but green fitness brings some real muscle when it comes to footprints in the building and a carbon footprint in your favor. So how can your facility do its part and be more sustainable?
Sustainability is more than just shutting off lights in an empty room and recycling. It affects every nook and cranny of your facility, from office supplies to cleaning supplies. Going paperless. LED bulbs. Water flow adjustments to showers, toilets, sinks and fountains. Eco-friendly cleaning practices. Efficient HVAC systems. Sustainable flooring. Efficient temperature control. And energy-efficient gym equipment.
While weights, stretches and calisthenics are about as analog and environmentally friendly as you can get, some great strides have been made in energy-generating cardio equipment that actually converts kinetic human energy into reusable, clean energy that goes back to your grid. It lowers energy costs and your carbon footprint. That said, it could pay for the price difference, if any, over its lifetime. And depending on the manufacturer, you could get a sustainable warranty.
While branding, marketing and promotions will establish your identity and get word out about your fitness facility, generating interest is required before anyone signs on the dotted membership contract line. Getting 80% of the pie requires a lot of work.
Incorporating sustainable practices into your gym is not only an environmentally responsible choice but also a strategic move for your business. By adopting eco-friendly initiatives like these, you can position your gym as a leader, attracting the lion’s share of all gym-goers.
