Planet Fitness announced record-breaking participation in its 2025 High School Summer Pass program. More than 3.7 million teens ages 14 to 19 participated in the free summer initiative, completing over 19 million workouts from June through August in Planet Fitness’ 2,700-plus locations across the U.S. and Canada.
The unprecedented participation reflects teens’ strong desire to stay active and prioritize their well-being during a critical time when school is out, and regular fitness programs like gym class and after-school sports are on pause. Planet Fitness is proud to provide the opportunity for millions of teens across the country to exercise in a safe and welcoming fitness environment during the summer months, further supporting their commitment to mental and physical health.
“We’re incredibly honored that more than 3.7 million teens chose to prioritize their health and wellness this summer at Planet Fitness,” said Colleen Keating, the CEO of Planet Fitness. “Our record high participation is a testimonial that this generation embraces fitness and well-being, and we’re proud to offer free access each year to help teens in our communities build confidence and develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Through the High School Summer Pass program, we’re fulfilling our core mission of making fitness accessible, enjoyable and non-intimidating for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.”
As a result of this year’s program alone, Planet Fitness has invested more than $168 million in waived membership dues to promote youth health and wellness and improve the physical and mental health of millions of teens.
The success of this program couldn’t come at a more critical time. According to the 2024 United States Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth the overall physical activity grade for children and youth remained low at D-, the same grade it received in 2022 when the last report was issued. The grade was derived from National Survey of Children’s Health and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data that showed:
- Only 20% to 28% of 6- to 17-year-olds meet the 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by the U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
- The proportion of children who meet the physical activity guidelines has decreased slightly since 2016, when these data were first available.
A survey conducted by Planet Fitness of more than 6,500 participating teens and 4,400 guardians revealed significant positive outcomes from the 2025 program, demonstrating measurable impact across dimensions of teen development:
- Building Lifelong Habits: An impressive 93% of teen participants report that the program has actively helped them create sustainable health and fitness routines that extend beyond the summer months.
- Confidence is Climbing: 78% of participants report feeling more confident since joining the program, highlighting how a little movement goes a long way.
- Energy Boost: 80% of teens have seen an increase in their energy levels.
- Meaningful Family Impact: 86% of parents report that their teens’ participation in the program sparked new, meaningful conversations about health and wellness with their teens.
- Inspiring Family Fitness: 76% of parents report that their teens working out this summer has inspired others in their family to get more physically active.
“Planet Fitness gave me a consistent and welcoming space to stay active during the summer,” said Hannah S., a teen participant from Illinois. “It helped me build healthy habits, stay motivated and take care of my mental and physical health. I appreciated having access to a safe, non-intimidating gym where I could focus on my personal growth. The environment was positive and made me feel comfortable working out, no matter my experience level.”
The 2025 High School Summer Pass program’s success stems from Planet Fitness’ dedication to removing barriers to fitness and creating a high-value, inclusive environment where people of all ages and fitness levels can thrive. By investing in teenage wellness, the company continues to fulfill its mission of enhancing lives through accessible, high-quality fitness experiences.
