Screen Shot 2015-04-15 at 8.51.25 AMCoronado Fitness Club in Coronado, California, has a mission to get kids moving. With that mission in mind it launched the P2 Training program aimed at giving kids ages 10 through 15 the opportunity to workout and have fun.

“We’re trying to get kids fired up about working out,” said Chris Foote, the owner of Coronado Fitness Club.

The series began on April 7, 2015 and will last for six weeks. The six-week training program is $200, or $17 per session. During the program, certified trainers will guide kids through basic movement patterns that increase flexibility and build strength.

Foote explained the program is a great opportunity for kids that don’t participate in sports to be active, though those interested in athleticism are welcome as well. “We’re hopefully teaching them lifelong health habits, while making it fun,” he said.

For the past four years Coronado Fitness Club had run the P2 Training program through a local middle school, but decided to branch out this year due to the program’s popularity. This month’s series saw 26 participants and is open to both children of members and non-members.

Foote explained P2 Training has given the gym a lot of exposure throughout the local community. “We’ve been introduced to parents that didn’t know us,” he said. “It’s given us more visibility.”

Depending on the range of fitness levels or interests, Foote said in the future he may split the group up into more focused divisions.

According to Foote, the key to running a successful training program involving kids is to ask for their feedback. “Keeping their attention is tough,” he said. “So asking the kids for feedback is important.”

Of course, fun is a key element. “We just want the kids to have fun and enjoy it and want to come back,” said Foote. “The best part for me is it’s a fun, positive environment where we can help kids build self esteem.”
