Super Star Versus Club Star

Every fitness manager is looking for the next Super Star to walk in their facility and gross thousands above your current top producer. However, along with this comes a lot of problems. Sometimes large egos and demanding attitudes override what that person can do financially.

Instead, look for someone that can be a Club Star! A Club Star is an employee that meets your expectations, is passionate about what they do, someone that respects and exemplifies your club culture and does not put themselves first before the club’s needs. This is the individual you want on your team. Here are some key points to look for in the interview process:

• Gracious to every team member they come in contact with
• Asks a lot of questions about the club, the department, and the your experience
• Attentive to details about the club and the position
• Using more ‘You’ and ‘they’ words then ‘me’ or ‘mine’
• Look for the candidate to have a service-focused mindset to clients (i.e. getting clients water, towel, follow-up phone calls)
• Look for someone that knows something about your club and its history

These may seem like small things, but a Club Star will exemplify these points. Super Stars will drive everything back to ‘them’ and ‘their’ training. Club Stars are also able to take guidance and instruction where Super Stars will not let anyone step on their ego. Even though the Super Star may look good to hire, the Club Star is in it for the long haul.
