Soaring Eagles Versus Quacking Ducks: A True Story
Share on FacebookShare on LinkedIn

One morning, two people set out with one goal in mind, to get to the top of the mountain. As they ascend up the path they come to a giant rock blocking the path. On one side of the rock is the mountain and on the other side is the cliff. There is no way for them to climb over the rock, move it by themselves, or move around it because to one side is a cliff, while the other is the mountain. What begins to happen? Management begins. Someone takes the lead and starts to strategize a way to move the rock. Everyone then puts their hand on the rock to try and move it. As more people walk up the path, the line of people continues to get backed up longer and longer. Eventually, new people walking up the path can’t see the people up front trying to move the rock, all they see are people hanging out and standing around. When asked what everyone is doing, someone replies, “We’re having a picnic.” This is how most companies operate. A few people in the organization know what needs to be done and attempt to move the rock, while most of the other employees have no clue what the company is trying to accomplish. They don’t have their hand on the rock trying to move it!

The Rock — The Rock is a living document that drives every department within the company. It’s reviewed on a regular basis to make sure it is in sync with today’s plan and tomorrow’s goals. Every department has a Rock statement starting with the Company Rock. Here are some examples of Gainesville Health and Fitness Rock’s:

GHF Rock — We will gain and retain members by creating an experience that helps people get the most out of life and to inspire them to become their best.

Floor Instructor Rock — We will motivate people to achieve their desired results while building lasting relationships. We give our members the gift of fitness by helping them overcome the mental and physical barriers associated with living a healthy lifestyle.

Desk Rock — We sincerely welcome people into the club and make them feel good about having been in our facility. We will provide solutions with the knowledge of where and how to access information so no question goes unanswered.

Sales Rock — We inspire people to move from the thinking stage of fitness to a lifetime commitment of getting and staying fit.

Personal Training Rock — Through specialized, caring and professional trainers we create relationships and develop personalized programs for members looking for the discipline and specific results that can only be achieved through one-on-one interaction. We enhance the lives of our members and community through special events throughout the year.
