Anytime Fitness’ first club opened in Cambridge, Minnesota on May 28, 2002. Twelve years later, it has opened its 2,500th gym in Madrid.
“A very small percentage of U.S.-based franchises can say that nearly one-fourth of their units are located outside of the United States,” said Chuck Runyon, the CEO of Anytime Fitness in a press release. “It’s proof that our business model is attractive to potential franchisees and consumers worldwide. In fact, 2014 will likely be the first year that we open more gyms internationally than in the U.S.”
Over 1,000 clubs have been opened in the past four years throughout every state in the U.S. Internationally, Anytime Fitness has seen its clubs open in nearly 20 countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Japan, India, Singapore, Poland, Qatar, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. This new addition in Spain will be the sixth location to open in the country over the past two years.
In the last five years, over 350 gyms in Australia, 30 clubs in the United Kingdom, 41 gyms in Japan and 23 in the Netherlands have opened. In fact, the seventh club in Spain will open in the coming weeks.
This year, Anytime Fitness was ranked number one on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list, moving up from its place as number six in 2013.
Overall, Anytime Fitness is focused on the future.
