CS: How did you get your start in the health and fitness industry?
MP: I was a competitive bodybuilder in Vermont and started teaching classes to offset my workouts. From there I became a part-time sales person and worked in every area of the club including department manager and general manager of multiple clubs.
CS: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
MP: The biggest challenge has been, and continues to be, keeping on top of the ever-evolving fitness industry and making changes that are right for the business or the client.
CS: What are the keys to your success?
MP: A fundamental aspect is that I started at the ground level of the fitness industry, giving me a great base to build on. I have made career choices and explored opportunities that strengthen my passion for the industry.
CS: What’s your favorite leadership book and why?
MP: There are so many great books — but the one that I always refer back to is “Good To Great” by Jim Collins. It’s all about making sure that team members are on the right seat and perhaps even belong on the bus — in my experience, this is key to success.
