Insight into Beacon Health & Fitness Granger, the 2022 Certified Facility of the Year according to the Medical Fitness Association.

Beacon Health & Fitness in Granger, Indiana, has been named the 2022 Medical Fitness Association Certified Facility of the Year by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA).

The award is presented annually to a certified medical fitness facility that “serves as an industry benchmark by developing programs, achieving results and adhering to the highest standards.”

Concerning the award, Alan Loyd, the executive director of Beacon Health & Fitness, credited his team and said the accolade indicates they’re on the right track as an organization.

“Anything that recognizes our associates means the world to us,” said Loyd. “We’re so fortunate to have such a strong team. Our organization, Beacon Health System, has made a deep, meaningful commitment to medical fitness and has allocated resources for many years to help us meet this calling. Recognition can be validating. It tells you you’re doing something right, that you’re on the right track — and that’s always gratifying to hear from your peers.”

Here, Loyd shares additional insight into the award and the significance of medical fitness.

What do you feel were the top keys to Beacon Health & Fitness Granger achieving this award?

I was actually talking to the director of our Beacon Health & Fitness Granger location, Sarah Strefling, about this on our return back from the MFA conference. Sarah pointed out that what we do is really about “people, programs and making connections.”

Building a team that understands what medical fitness is and each person’s role in that continuum, offering programs that, through exercise, improve the quality of life of people with life-altering diagnoses, and connecting club members to clinical experts in physical therapy and sports medicine has really been, according to Sarah, key for us.

What does having a medical fitness facility mean for a community? What are the advantages?

Medical fitness does many things for a community. It provides a place where fitness and clinical services converge to provide improved outcomes to members and patients alike.

When leading by example, a medical fitness facility can elevate the safety and quality standards along with the qualifications of a professional fitness staff, for the larger fitness community. And we’re all the better for it.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

The medical fitness community, nurtured by the Medical Fitness Association, is a tight knit group that is always willing to support and advise one another. Any success we’ve had at Beacon Health & Fitness is due in no small part to our colleagues around the country who have been so instrumental to us.

In 2020, Beacon Health & Fitness Granger also received recognition from the MFA for Most Innovative Program surrounding its “Best Medicine Program,” a series of classes designed to improve the quality of life for people with specific conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, cancer and arthritis.

Beacon Health & Fitness boasts four facilities in Indiana.
