Midtown Athletic Club announced a partnership with the United States Tennis Association and the Chicago Park District to introduce the Alan G. Schwartz Community Tennis Program, a citywide initiative designed to expand access to tennis across Chicago. Midtown Athletic Club and the Schwartz family are contributing $750,000 toward a $2 million fundraising goal that will enable this no- and low-cost program to run for the next 20 years.
In addition to this financial commitment, Midtown Athletic Club’s team of top tennis professionals is training USTA coaches to deliver high-quality, accessible tennis instruction in neighborhood parks throughout Chicago, helping expand access to the sport in communities across the city. The training equipped coaches with the tools, curriculum, and best practices needed to create safe, engaging and welcoming tennis experiences, with a focus on removing barriers to participation in underserved communities.
As a result of this partnership, Adult Tennis 101 classes, youth programming and fitness-based tennis offerings will be available at 43 parks across Chicago this summer, from Rogers Park to Beverly. Programs are designed to be low- or no-cost and open to the public, reinforcing a commitment to accessibility and equity. The program offers both adult and junior programming to ensure opportunities for players of all ages and experience levels.
Founded in honor of Alan G. Schwartz, the program carries forward the legacy of one of tennis’s most influential leaders. A former USTA president, national champion and innovator, Schwartz dedicated his life to growing the game and making it more accessible to all. He co-founded the original Midtown Tennis Club in 1969, building what would become one of the most influential tennis and fitness organizations in North America. Schwartz believed tennis was more than a sport, it was a lifelong teacher, a pathway to confidence and a gateway to opportunity. That philosophy continues to guide Midtown today, shaping both its community initiatives and its broader mission.

Midtown Athletic Club has built upon Schwartz’ legacy to become a leader in luxury fitness and racquet sports, with clubs across the U.S. and Canada offering world-class tennis facilities, boutique fitness experiences, and resort-style amenities. Rooted in more than 50 years of tennis excellence, Midtown continues to prioritize community, connection and personal growth, both within its clubs and beyond.
“My father founded Midtown in 1970 with a simple but powerful belief: tennis has the ability to change lives. One of the things I admired most about him was his commitment to bringing the sport to young people who otherwise might not have had access to it,” said Steven Schwartz, the CEO of Midtown Athletic Clubs. “He believed tennis could build confidence, create opportunity, and connect people across backgrounds and communities. The Alan G. Schwartz Community Tennis Initiative carries that vision forward by helping more people experience the benefits of the game. For our family and for everyone at Midtown, this initiative is both a tribute to his legacy and an investment in the next generation.”
Known for its leadership in health, wellness and racquet sports, Midtown Athletic Club continues to extend its impact beyond its clubs, supporting initiatives that bring meaningful programming into communities across Chicago. The Alan G. Schwartz Community Tennis Program reflects this commitment to building a more inclusive, connected and active city.
