Prioritizing Professional Development

Are you prioritizing professional development for your team? If not, here are five reasons why you should.

Professional development in the context of fitness and wellness involves continuing education to learn new ideas and strategies. And, it’s a must for successful operators to ensure they’re meeting the needs of their customer base.

Here are five reasons you should start prioritizing professional development:

1. Shared learning. A commitment to professional development is a commitment to continuous learning. If you’re learning, not only will you benefit, but your co-workers and customers will benefit. How? Shared learning. You can only teach what you know and the only way you learn is if you make a commitment to learning. By sharing your learnings with others, you can improve their performance and the overall performance of your organization.

2. New ideas. Professional development will lead to a continuous flow of new ideas. New ideas give you the ability to be flexible and change your strategy to adjust to circumstances. COVID-19 proved we sometimes need to change our strategy.

Part of changing strategy is having new ideas to address new challenges and opportunities. The new ideas can be additional or replacement products to add on to your current offering. The new ideas could be ways of motivating employees or new hiring practices. There are endless possibilities for new ideas.

3. Technology. Many times, professional development involves learning new technology. Most changes in any marketplace are the result of changes in technology applications. What this means is those who are best positioned to make changes to their strategy are those who can adjust to changes in technology. Don’t get caught behind the next technology change — it’s coming.

4. Best Practices. None of us have all the answers and many times we unnecessarily try unproven strategies hoping for success. Professional development allows you to study best practices others have used to become successful. Instead of “learning the hard way,” why wouldn’t you want to study the successful strategies others have used?

Most importantly, learning best practices will help you “shortcut” the time required to implement new ideas and strategies. Don’t learn the hard way — commit to professional development.

5. Opportunities. Similar to new ideas, because of your commitment to professional development, you will have new opportunities. These opportunities could come in the form of people you meet, resources you gain access to, information from other industries, etc. Not all of these opportunities will hit your sweet spot, but chances are some will. Do you want to miss out on a new opportunity?

If you’re looking for a professional development opportunity, I suggest you consider a peer-to-peer group. Peer groups made up of similar, like-minded professionals will provide the professional development needed to navigate the current times.
