In March 2015, the Active Sports Clubs’ leadership team appeared on the cover of Club Solutions Magazine, before the company’s transition to Active Wellness.
Since the cover story, much has changed at the company in addition to the name change, such as a partnership with St. Joseph Health and the launch of a number of exciting new initiatives and projects.
Here, Bill McBride, co-founder, president and CEO of Active Wellness, and Jill Kinney, co-founder and chairman of Active Wellness, discuss KINETIC, a new concept in health that combines a St. Joseph Hoag Health Wellness Corner, fitness facilities and lifestyle coaching under one roof.
Located in Newport Beach, California, KINETIC “offers customers an integrated experience where nutrition, lifestyle, weight management and personal training experts collaborate to provide a personalized approach toward each individual’s journey to look and feel their best.” According to the Irvine Company, they plan to expand KINETIC to its workplace communities in Orange County, San Diego, West Los Angeles and the Silicon Valley.
This is Part 2 in a four-part series discussing key changes and projects at Active Wellness. To read Part 1, click here.

CS: How did the idea for the KINETIC facility come about?
JK: The Irvine Company wanted to improve their fitness tenant amenity at Newport Center and had been in discussion with a number of possible providers. St. Joseph Health had recently established a partnership with Irvine Company, and we were brought in to develop a new model that incorporated the healthcare services, tenant needs and our fitness and wellness services.
CS: Why is the facility unique?
JK: KINETIC is unique in that it takes the traditional corporate tenant amenity to a new level with fully integrated medical and wellness programming, custom corporate wellness programs, cutting-edge studio programs and the quality and convenience found in top tier fitness centers.
BM: The offerings are not only science-based, but also engaging and fun. It truly is unique in approach and complete lifestyle management integration.
CS: What are the hallmarks/unique attributes of the facility?
BM: Imagine the latest fitness programming and amenities that best accommodate busy, everyday life. Now add in reputable medical care, lifestyle management and holistic support. We’re thrilled and positioned to deliver this convenient new model that integrates all aspects of good health and wellbeing, backed by science, fun, technology and service.
CS: What type of feedback have you received?
BM: People are enjoying the convenience and depth of offerings. Feedback has been extremely positive. As with any new concept, there is still work to be done on telling the story of what this new product is. The membership and patient visits continue to grow each month with very low attrition.
CS: What can other health clubs learn from looking at this facility?
BM: Lifestyle support is an opportunity which is much broader than simply delivering fitness services.
CS: What is your vision for this concept?
BM: KINETIC is still in the “Proof of Concept” stage. The learnings are there for many facility integrations that may or may not look exactly like this model. Having fitness, wellness and medical support proximate with a focus on convenience and engagement has been proven, and this is something we are working on expanding on in many sites currently.
JK: We are in the process of building a number of these now and expect to learn a great deal about how to best integrate them into commercial buildings.
