Dan Young, the founder and CEO of Performance Food Centers, shares how health clubs can attract and retain members through nutrition.

In today’s competitive fitness landscape, attracting and retaining members goes beyond offering state-of-the-art equipment and well-designed workout spaces. Health clubs are increasingly realizing that supporting their members’ overall wellness. This includes nutrition, which plays a vital role in long-term engagement and satisfaction.

Research shows members are more likely to stay committed when their clubs provide tools that integrate healthy eating habits with fitness routines. For many individuals, exercise and nutrition are inseparable; without proper fuel, performance and recovery can suffer. By weaving nutrition education and access into their operations, clubs can position themselves as comprehensive wellness hubs rather than just places to work out.

One effective approach is to think about nutrition as a continuation of the member journey. Before a workout, members may seek energy-boosting options that help them maximize their performance. Post-workout, recovery-focused nutrition becomes essential for muscle repair and reducing fatigue. All in all, promoting balanced daily nutrition supports broader health goals.

Health clubs can integrate this strategy in several ways. For example, hosting periodic nutrition workshops or seminars creates opportunities to educate members in an engaging, community-centered environment. Partnerships with certified nutrition professionals can provide credible guidance, whether through one-on-one consultations or group sessions. Digital communication channels, such as newsletters or in-app messaging, can also share practical nutrition tips, recipe ideas and seasonal health advice.

The benefits extend beyond member results. When clubs take a proactive role in supporting nutrition, they deepen trust and loyalty. Members recognize the club as an ally in their overall wellness journey, which can increase retention rates. Additionally, integrating nutrition into the culture of the facility builds differentiation in a crowded marketplace. In short, the club becomes more than a gym: it becomes a partner in health.

The future of fitness is holistic. By connecting exercise with nutrition, health clubs can create a more complete member experience, foster lasting engagement and strengthen their position as wellness leaders.
